Sunning Turtles on Travertine

I have been head over heels in colored pencil since you heard from me last.  First of all last weekend we had a Beginning Colored Pencil Workshop in Charleston.  For the first time I did one in someone’s home.  It was a lot of fun.  Check out the Lowcountry Artists page on Facebook.  Helen Beacham had everyone, including the instructor, lay their pieces on the floor for a picture at the close of the workshop.  She posted that picture on the Lowcountry page and dared everyone to pick out the instructor’s piece.  I don’t know if I am happy or sad to report that NO ONE picked out mine.  Really the group had done a great job and it was fun to  see them all together.  You can see if you can pick out mine.

Further news about the tiles-I have been doing a lot of investigation with the local tile companies and they all have good supplies of travertine tile.  Some of it has edges like those you see in the examples here.  Others are smooth.  Some surfaces are smoother than others.  The good news is that other than finding good suppliers, I also believe that now I know how to prepare them for placement as part of a tile wall.  Spraying with grout spray is their suggestion and as soon as I can do one I am willing to take a chance on ruining, I’ll have final word. Of course these pieces can always be framed and they also look good just placed on a small easel. It seems that each piece of stone offers different challanges, therefore you learn more each time you do one.  I really like the looks I have gotten, who knows what’s next?

Other good news is that I will be doing a workshop on Colored Pencil on Travertine in October.  This will be Thursday evening, Oct. 10, 5:30-8:30, $45.  Several people have asked about evening workshops.  We have this one scheduled for an evening and Lynda has one on a Saturday afternoon.  Support these new times if you want more of them.
